Call for Participation

2019 UC Davis SOTL Conference Call For Participation

Join us for the 2019 UC Davis SOTL Conference, hosted by the Center for Educational Effectiveness. This conference is dedicated to celebrating and sharing the work of UC Davis’ growing community of scholarly educators. Together we will share research, ideas, practices and resources in support of evidence-supported teaching innovation at our university.

This conference is for you:

  • If you use a research mindset to assess and inform your teaching practices.
  • If you’ve collected data to help you learn about our students and better support their success.
  • If you innovate in the classroom and use evidence to understand the outcome.
  • If you’d like to discuss scholarly teaching ideas with other interested educators.
  • If you’d like to learn more about teaching research at UC Davis.

We invite you to submit a proposal to share your work, tools, and ideas with other scholarly educators at UC Davis.

Overview of Submissions:

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) is applied research on teaching and learning, in which we pursue and share new knowledge about the practice of teaching. In general, SOTL includes gathering and analyzing evidence as a means to make discoveries, inform designs, and evaluate outcomes. We welcome a variety of models of scholarship and kinds of evidence in this conference.

We are particularly (but not exclusively) interested in submissions that showcase:

  1. Projects that show teaching innovations, and use evidence to critically explore their outcomes;
  2. Work that helps us as educators to better understand our diverse students and their learning experiences;
  3. Work that shows methods or resources that others at UC Davis might use toward scholarly teaching or SOTL;
  4. Works-in-progress and exploratory works that invite constructive dialogue toward future projects; and
  5. Work that is generally relevant and informative to UC Davis’ community of scholarly and reflective educators.

Types of Submissions

An aim of this conference is to foster constructive synthesis of ideas and interdisciplinary collaboration. Accordingly, we welcome contributions from across UC Davis’ educational community, including faculty, students, post-docs, and staff. Relevant work that has been presented at conferences outside of UC Davis is welcome.

We are currently seeking submissions of the following formats for the 2019 SOTL Conference:

  • Talks (15 Minutes each): A research presentation (typically with slides), fifteen minutes in duration. A successful talk proposal includes a complete research story, including evidence, analysis, and conclusions that are relevant to other educators or SOTL researchers.
  • Resource Tables (45 Minute Session): A table-based, interactive discussion intended to introduce audiences to resources, techniques, and methods that audience members might use to further their own scholarly teaching pursuits. Resource tables often involve a semi-scripted introduction, live demo, unstructured questions, and handouts or follow-up materials. In the past, resource tables have provided a means to share a technique or resource described in a talk. Please consider planning for more than one presenter, to accommodate multiple threads of discussion or demonstration.
  • Posters (45 Minute Session): An informative poster describing a research project, findings, or methods, intended to foster individual dialogue between the presenter and the poster’s visitors. A poster is also an appropriate companion to a talk, to provide a platform for an interactive or data-rich exploration of a topic. Posters on works-in-progress, exploratory works, and methods or resources are also welcome.
